Turn Taking Social Skills Story & Visual Supports
$6.50
IDEAL for: Teaching turn taking in preschool or home * early intervention social lessons * teaching taking turns to students with autism ASD * ABA programs * Inclusion * positive behavioral supports * emotional regulation * behavior intervention plans * BIP * HFA * Social skills groups * Social emotional learning SEL * Sibling rivalry Turn taking is a fundamental skill that many young children, children with autism, or children with developmental delays struggle with in school and at home with siblings. This social skills story discusses how it might feel when you have to take turns and you don’t want to and then gives several concrete ways of taking turns involving visual supports that are included. Additionally, because turn taking is such a critical beginning skill for early learners, a printable is included with ideas for continuing to work on turn taking in naturalistic ways throughout the day. The story, activities, and supports are ideal for children in preschool, kindergarten, first grade, or special education. Included in this product: * Social story in color and ink saver option coloring book option * Visual supports to help guide children to take turns that are introduced in the social story * A variety of visual prompts or cues to show who’s turn it is * Printable visual to put in the classroom or home to remind children of the steps * Printable of simple turn taking song that can be sung as child is waiting * Coloring worksheet to reinforce concepts introduced in the social story * Printable showing naturalistic ways to work on turn taking with beginning learners How should I teach this? 1. Read the printed social story or show on a DIGITAL DEVICE 2. Set up opportunities with 2 children and 1 activity or toy such as swing, slide, or highly preferred toy. When child is successful with 2 children, more children can join but this will increase the difficulty as the children will have a longer wait time. 3. Discuss the fact that there is only 1 item and that means that only 1 child will be able to use it at a time. Remind students of the social story and decide which visual they would like to use to take turns. 4. The visuals included can be used with the words “my/your” if the child does not have difficulty with pronouns, but because many children do, there are blank spots where the names can be written or a photo can be placed if child is not yet recognizing their name. 5. Model using the method that has been used. 6. If a timer is used, it is beneficial to use a visual timer or sand hourglass timer so that it is obvious that the wait time is decreasing. 7. While children are waiting you sing the song included or use the visual for “frog jumping/counting” 8. Make certain that in the initial stages wait times are kept brief and then gradually lengthened as child is successful. 9. Have students complete the coloring sheet and use the time to discuss how they may feel when they have to wait while someone else takes a turn but also the benefits of taking turns. 10. Remember to also set up opportunities to practice turn taking and turn taking words (“my turn” “Your turn”) with simple activities (see printable for suggestions) 11. Praise 12. Usually receiving turn or preferred toy is enough reinforcement but if no progress you may introduce a token board to earn a separate reinforcer Thank you so much for buying this resource!
