Description

River Friendly River Wild by Jane Kurtz is a collection of poems written about the 1997 Red River flood in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The book begins with this Author's Note: "I wrote many of these poems in the weeks just after the flood, while living in a borrowed house in the small town of Walhalla." Her story is about living through a natural disaster.

The text is youthful and wise. Jane's immediate concerns are her cat, Kiwi, and her friend, Sarah. Her parents comfort her and help her cope with the trauma of losing almost everything " her home and "one terrific neighborhood". While grateful to be alive, Jane Lutz also learns "that some memories live in things " in old clothes and photographs, drawings and trees". The Red River subsides, but a new dike through the neighborhood will make it uninhabitable. We don't know where Jane and her family go. "But Mom and Dad and Max and Kiwi and Sarah and I will make new memories . . .". Neil Brennan's beautiful paintings have a softness that tempers a raw reality.

I did not find this book read aloud online.
