How far would you go to save democracy? Who is responsible for saving democracy? The courts? The military? In this ESL legal lesson students will discuss how far is too far for the courts to go to save democracy. How much free speech should be permitted when it risks invalidating an election? How do we limit fake news? From the lens of an article about the Brazilian Supreme Court and recent efforts to undo the election results in Brazil, students will be challenged to assess how much speech should be given up in protection of democracy. At what point does limiting speech lure a democracy into the dangerous territory of a dictatorship? Your students will make the call on how much free speech is too much or too little when it comes to maintaining a democratic government.
