Your students will love exploring HTwins Scale of the Universe 2, and this sequence of activities is scaffolded to help them get the most out of this incredible digital tool for exploring scale across our universe! Includes 3 leveled passages to introduce the scale of the universe, vocabulary practice, unit scavenger hunts, and guided research.
➥ Can be used as a week-long project, or independent packet for enrichment, extra credit, or extended student or teacher absences. Scaffolded and includes graphic organizers, visual and other supports for SWDs and ELLs.

About This Resource:
➥ The HTwins Scale of the Universe 2 is a website that shows the sizes of different objects in the universe, from atoms to galaxies. It allows users to zoom in and out to see the relative sizes of different objects.
➥ This set of activities used in conjunction with HTwins Scale 2 aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards crosscutting concept on scale and science and engineering practices regarding models by providing a visual representation of the relative sizes of different objects in the universe, allowing students to zoom in and out to see the sizes of different objects, and providing information about the sizes and distances of different objects.

⫸ Scale of the Universe: Intro Reading Passage & Questions (3 Levels)
3 different levels for your middle school students (labeled at bottom).
Comprehension questions and predictions about relative sizes of very small objects.
⫸ Scale of the Universe: Vocabulary
Vocabulary matching w/wordbank (atom, galaxy, etc.).
Shows smallest to largest objects when completed.
⫸ Scale of the Universe Unit Scavenger Hunt (2 Pages)
Definitions of units of distance/length from yoctometer to parsec.
Students use HTwins Scale 2 to locate and record examples of objects measured in each unit.
⫸ Scale of the Universe: Comparing Units and Objects
Students use HTwins Scale 2 to locate and record examples of objects measured in 4 different size categories.
Within each example, students provide two units of measurement, notes about the object, and another object that is comparative in size.
Follow-up questions include understanding x 10⁰ when used in measurements; and reflecting on why different units are used for different objects.
⫸ Scale of the Universe: Guided Research
Students select either a very small or very large unfamilliar object from HTwins Scale 2 to research further.
A graphic organizer breaks down research parts and allows space for notes and sources.
⫸ Scale of the Universe: Essay
Students use their research from the previous sheet to compose an essay.
