Description
This Christmas themed activity will have your first or second grade students putting words in order to make a sentence that describes a picture. It can be done independently, with a partner, or with a small group. This makes a great intervention or after-school tutoring activity. I always have a set of Make a Sentence in the pocket chart on the back of my easel. You can also add magnets to the backs of the word cards and have children use the front of your desk (if it's metal) or heater to make sentences. After they have put the sentence in order, I like to have them touch under and read the sentence a few times to begin to build fluency. The children can use the capital letter and punctuation clues to see which words come at the beginning and end of the sentences. Since you can print as many as you'd like, you may also want to have several sets in bags for children to take back to their seats to work on. You might want to put a sticker or colored dot on the back of the cards to keep the sets apart when making multiple sets.
This set contains 5 sentences to put in order. There is a different colored border to tell the sentences apart. If you'd like a little more to do, you can have the children pick one sentence from the set, write it, and illustrate the sentence their own way. I have included a page for this.
I made the sentences with simple, decodable names, words, and High Frequency words for reading ease. Each sentence has a picture to go with it. This helps the children get used to looking at pictures to help read. I hope your children enjoy this activity as much as mine do!
