Unit Description: Shakespeare and the French Poet by Yves Bonnefoy
In this unit, students will embark on a poetic exploration of timeless themes as they engage with Shakespeare and the French Poet by Yves Bonnefoy. This unit investigates the rich intersection of Shakespeare's classical influence and Bonnefoy's modern poetic reflections. Students will analyze how Bonnefoy's poem draws from the legacy of Shakespeare to examine the universality of themes such as memory, mortality, and human emotion. Through reading, discussion, and creative projects, students will deepen their understanding of the enduring power of poetry and its ability to transcend time. By comparing and contrasting the stylistic choices of Shakespeare and Bonnefoy, students will explore the evolution of poetic form from structured verse to modern free verse. Through critical thinking exercises, collaborative projects, and reflective writing, students will also explore the role of the poet in society and the ways in which both Shakespeare and Bonnefoy use language to illuminate the human experience.
This unit is designed to challenge students' analytical skills, expand their appreciation of poetry, and foster an understanding of how poetry adapts and evolves over time while still holding true to its ability to explore universal themes. Through the lens of both historical and contemporary poetry, students will gain insight into the complexities of poetic form, the timeless nature of human experience, and the profound connections between past and present poets.
