Description

Upper Elementary students still love picture books and Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a wonderful time to use them in the classroom. As teachers we know this, but making sure students have support in doing grade-level thinking with the books can be time consuming. These no-prep worksheets will guide students through thinking more deeply about this powerful biography of Sammy Lee. The book Sixteen Years in Sixteen Seconds is a wonderful exploration of Sammy Lee's life and the challenges he had to overcome to become the first Asian American Olympic Gold Medalist.

Sixteen Years in Sixteen Seconds follows Sammy Lee through his childhood in Los Angeles, experiencing discrimination on his own and alongside a Black friend. Sammy sets his sights on becoming an olympic diver and lets nothing, not even WW2 stand in the way of realizing his dream. The story is inspirational and thought provoking.

These activities will support students with a scaffolded approach to key reading and vocabulary skills.
