Description

Reading workshop can seem vague and ineffective, but not when it is skills-based with specific activities. This month-long complete social issues fiction reading unit will enable your students to manage their reading, use text evidence to back up claims, and understand skills such as internal monologue and perspective. You'll have everything you need linked in one slideshow so you can just attach and go.

This month-long unit includes:

✅ Main slideshow that is linked with lessons, activities, and due dates

✅ Mentor text to refer to throughout the unit

✅ 10 mini lessons (use digitally but can be printed for notebooks): Intro to social issues, literary terms, identity markers, point of view/perspective, response to conflict, characters' relationships, power in relationships, power imbalance in groups, dialogue/internal monologue, theme

✅ 5 sets of discussion questions for groups to use based on the mini lessons

✅ 5 separate reading entries for students to record text evidence based on their books that match up with the mini lessons

✅ Activities show students how to properly cite text evidence with examples

✅ Reading plan so clubs know what pages to read and when

✅ A culminating project ( 'mini choice board") with a choice of 4 activities

Here is what I recommend for a smooth, organized unit:

⭐️Set up your students in book clubs with social issues books. I recommend letting them choose their books and groups when possible.

⭐️ Plug in the dates on the reading plan. Then, attach the main slideshow to your digital learning platform, making a copy for each student.

⭐️Students will create a reading plan for their books. Specific directions will guide them in this.

⭐️Have students complete the mentor text activity.

⭐️Teach the mini lessons. They should last about 10-15 minutes. Remember, the goal of a reading workshop is to get the kids actually reading!

⭐️During discussion days, students should have read up to a certain point, which will first be established in their reading plan. They then spend time discussing in groups, using the questions as a guide.

⭐️At the end of the unit, have kids select a project from the mini choice board.
These are great for assessments and bulletin boards!

I would truly appreciate your feedback with a rating and review. It helps me when making future products.

Enjoy!
