Understanding another persons' point of view or theory of mind, is a topic that is often difficult for students with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, social cognitive learning delays, or non-verbal learning disabilities. Learning this skill is often presented to older children but sometimes neglected at the early childhood stage. These activities are designed to target the first stages necessary in theory of mind or perspective taking. Before children can empathize with others they have to have a general awareness that other people have different likes, dislikes, feelings, etc. The lesson is presented first in the form of a social skills narrative and then an interactive book where they have to try to guess the feelings of the person in the situation, and then presented in a mini-book they can color and take home to reinforce the concepts. Group activities, individual activities, and partner activities are included. The activities are ideal for students 4-8, special education students, social skills groups, or lunch bunch groups, or ABA.
