Description
This is a US history passage with comprehension assessment on the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The earthquake struck early in the morning on April 18 and had a magnitude of 7.9, causing massive destruction. Buildings collapsed, roads cracked, and fires broke out, burning much of the city. Over 3,000 people died, and thousands lost their homes. The earthquake was the result of movement along the San Andreas Fault and remains one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. It also led to permanent changes in how cities prepare for earthquakes.
This passage is written for Grade 6-9 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc).
This "printable/no prep" resource includes:
1) An engaging 950-word passage called 'The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake." The text follows the events of April 18, 1906, when the city of San Francisco was almost completely destroyed by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake.
2) A total of 34 questions, including vocabulary, close-reading comprehension, and sequencing historical events. These questions require a close reading and re-reading of text and were written to align with these Common Core Informational Text Standards: RI.4.1, RI.4.5, and RI.5.4
3) A crossword puzzle for early finishers or to use as another form of assessment.
4) Answers to every question.
