Description

Yoshiko Uchida's the bracelet is a story about the internment of Japanese-Americans in 1942. This event in American history is told through the eyes of second grader, Emi. Her house in Berkeley California is now empty; her father is already in a prisoner-of-war camp in Montana. Emi, her mother, and her older sister are allowed two suitcases each for their move to Tanforan Racetracks. Emi's best friend gives her a thin, gold bracelet with a heart charm. ''It's for you to take to camp,'" she says.
Here the story takes on a significant subtext, 'things we loved and left behind…are things we carry in our hearts…" The bracelet is lost, but Emi learns that she 'would never forget Laurie, ever". This book represents people, things, places, and events that will never be forgotten. The Tanforan Racetracks are gone, but the memories remain. Joanna Yardley's illustrations are heart warming and heart breaking.

This story is read online by KonokaABC.
