Unit Description:

In this multi-week unit on The Chosen by Chaim Potok, students will explore the themes of identity, tradition, and personal freedom within the context of Jewish culture and the complex relationships between fathers and sons. Set in post-World War II Brooklyn, the novel tells the story of Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders, two young men from different religious backgrounds who form an unlikely friendship amidst the pressures of their respective communities.

This unit will guide students through the rich character development of Reuven and Danny and their struggles with familial expectations, religious duty, and intellectual freedom. Students will engage in discussions and critical analysis of key themes such as the tension between tradition and modernity, the role of silence and suffering in personal growth, and the complexities of friendship in the face of cultural barriers. Through reading, writing, and collaborative projects, students will gain a deeper understanding of the novel's exploration of choice, sacrifice, and the pursuit of personal identity. By the end of the unit, students will be able to relate the universal struggles faced by the characters to their own lives, developing both empathy and critical thinking skills.

Through a blend of literary analysis, group discussions, and creative projects, this unit encourages students to think critically about the intersections of religion, culture, and personal ambition and how these themes continue to resonate in today's world. The Chosen challenges students to reflect on how tradition shapes identity and how individuals navigate the pressures of family, community, and self-discovery.
