Description

This item is several products bundled together. The items tell the story of a 1950's ecosystem disaster in Borneo. It includes a 2 page reading, a 9 slide powerpoint, and a 1 page worksheet where the student works out the series of events . The PowerPoint has the key to the worksheet.
Malaria from mosquitoes was a problem in Borneo so the World Health Organization shipped DDT to kill the mosquitoes. However, the DDT also killed wasps, which controlled the caterpillar population. The food chain was altered, and eventually rats became prevalent, who were a serious source of plague and typhus. The ultimate solution was to parachute cats into Borneo, who ate the rats, and brought back a balance to the ecosystem.
The product serves a very good example of how a food chain can be disrupted by adding one variable, DDT.
