Description
Teach literary analysis skills with these three lessons. Students closely review a passage from chapter 38 of Kelly Barnhill's The Girl Who Drank the Moon. This lesson focuses on analyzing how Barnhill uses extended metaphors to create meaning within the passage. The included close reading covers the exciting moment where the people of the Protectorate are reclaiming their power by choosing to no longer live in the fear and sadness that they have felt all of their lives.
First students complete a vocabulary practice to familiarize themselves with vocabulary from the close reading. After, they complete a literary devices review activity where they learn about metaphors and extended metaphors and practice using them in their own writing. Next, students complete the close reading and fill out an evidence tracker to trace the extended metaphor within the passage and analyze the intended meaning. Lastly, students complete a structured literary analysis paragraph to demonstrate their learning. You will love this set of lessons, because they include everything your students need to be successful with writing a well-structured literary analysis paragraph. The included outline has built-in supports to guide students during each step of the writing process. As well, the included answer key with a sample paragraph will support you with teaching this lesson. This lesson will take 2-3 class periods.
