Description
Teach symbolism in The Giver with this engaging scene comparison & symbolism creative project for Lois Lowry's novel. Complete this symbolism activity with your students after reading chapter 15 of The Giver. This is a three-part project that takes about 3-4 class periods to complete and it is one of my students' FAVORITE The Giver activities that we complete during this unit.
First, students compare a scene from the novel to a scene from a play adaptation of The Giver. Afterward, students then review the movie adaptation of The Giver and compare this to the other two adaptations. Students make connections between the strategies that Lowry and the directors use to create their scenes with focus on how each creator uses symbolism and imagery to recreate Lowry's scene. Afterward, students write a structured paragraph response where they explain how each of the adaptations compares to Lowry's scene. Included within the lesson are links to the film and play, as well as step-by-step instructions and sentence starters to support students through the writing process.
After having completed the first two activities, students create their own interpretation of Lowry's scene using details from the text. Students love this part of the activity because they are given a lot of creative flexibility regarding how they wish to visually represent their scene. Included in the assignment are links to digital platforms to support students who would like to digitally represent their scene. Students also have the option to choose more traditional options such as painting or drawing the scene. Make sure you have some art supplies for this lesson (markers, colored pencils, crayons, paint, etc.).
Created on Google Docs. Compatible with Google Classroom.
