Unit Description:

This unit immerses students in the powerful and transformative story of Olaudah Equiano, one of the most influential voices of the abolitionist movement. Through close analysis of The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, students will uncover the personal and historical significance of Equiano's journey from enslavement to freedom, exploring themes of identity, resilience, and the universal pursuit of human rights.

As students examine Equiano's vivid descriptions of the Middle Passage, his life as an enslaved person, and his eventual self-purchased freedom, they will engage with the larger context of the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, and the moral contradictions of slavery. By connecting Equiano's life experiences with his passionate appeals for abolition, students will analyze how rhetoric, faith, and personal narrative intersect to inspire change.

Through rich discussions, collaborative projects, and critical reflections, this unit encourages students to think deeply about the complexities of justice and equality, as well as the enduring relevance of Equiano's story in contemporary conversations about freedom and human rights. By the end of the unit, students will not only appreciate the historical impact of Equiano's narrative but also develop their ability to critically evaluate literature as a tool for social and political advocacy.
