Description
Introducing our Lab Guide for Testing the Stroop Effect " a must-have resource for science teachers working with middle school and upper elementary students on the scientific method! But what is the Stroop Effect, you might ask? Simply put, it's a phenomenon that occurs when the brain has difficulty processing conflicting information.
In this lab, students will work in pairs to put the Stroop Effect to the test by taking turns reading and timing how long it takes to fully read a word list with control, compatible, and incompatible word and color pairings. Students will repeat the experiment a total of four times, calculating the average and gaining an understanding of the importance of collecting accurate and reliable data.
The variable being measured in this experiment is the time it takes for students to fully read the word list for each condition. As they work through the lab, students will use their data to figure out how the Stroop Effect works and reflect on their use of scientific methodology. And the best part? Your students will have so much fun with this experiment, they won't even realize they're learning! Updated 1/08/23 to also include an informative article and question set so students can learn more about how structures in the nervous system contribute to the Stroop Effect, with a bonus printable poster labeling the parts of the brain. Perfect for early finishers!
All you'll need for this no-prep activity is a set of stopwatches or a stopwatch app for each pair of students. Add this exciting lab guide and resource pack to your nervous system unit and watch your students' brains light up with curiosity!
