Unit Description: Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

In this multi-week unit, students will embark on an in-depth exploration of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, a powerful novel that examines the complexities of Igbo society, the effects of colonialism, and the struggles of personal and cultural identity. Through close reading, critical analysis, and engaging discussions, students will analyze the novel's themes of tradition vs. change, fate vs. free will, and masculinity and power.

This unit will challenge students to think deeply about the intersections of culture, history, and literature while developing their analytical, writing, and collaborative skills. Activities will include Socratic seminars, creative writing assignments, comparative analysis, and project-based learning that encourages connections between Achebe's novel and contemporary global issues.

By the end of the unit, students will not only understand Things Fall Apart as a literary masterpiece but also appreciate its historical and cultural significance as a defining work of postcolonial literature. Through this exploration, students will gain a deeper awareness of how narratives shape identity, resistance, and historical memory.
