Description

Finding an appropriate Valentine's Day activity for middle school can be tough. You and your students will LOVE this Valentine's Day book speed dating activity! It is a great way for kids to preview books to pique their interest so that they can select a book they will love. It is a fun, interactive way to get kids reading!

This product includes:

✅Thorough but simple directions for a successful activity

✅A suggested book list if you need ideas

✅Editable sample slide to use if you are not using actual books (room for you to insert a cover image plus a description of the book)

✅Book review forms for kids to fill out (color and black & white options)

Here is what I recommend for a smooth and successful activity:

⭐️Select books for your class to preview. I suggest doing either one per student in the class, or having kids travel in pairs (so you would need half the amount of books that you have as students…; for example: 20 kids would be 10 books).

⭐️Be sure you are picking very high-interest books for your kids. I have attached a list of 'must reads" for middle school if you need it.

⭐️Fill in the title, author, and snippet portion for each slide. A good place to find snippets is on goodreads.com.

⭐️After you have filled in your info, delete unused slides and attach the slideshow to your Google Classroom or digital learning platform. You could also print if you prefer. If you do print, I would recommend 4 slides to a page (you can do this in print preview mode). I have included black and white if you'd like to print.

⭐️Set up desks in long rows, with one book on each desk. I'm assuming you have access to books, but if you don't, you could print the cover and the book description. I did an example so you are clear on the directions.

⭐️Have kids pick a starting point, sit down, and start previewing the book.

⭐️Decide on your time limit (maybe about 2 minutes per book).

⭐️Students will browse through the book and the snippet, rate it, and write one sentence about their thoughts.

⭐️After the time limit, kids move to the right (or left…your choice!). Cycle through until kids have made it through all of the books.

Tips:

⭐️It's fun to set up the room like a café. Have quiet jazz music playing, and maybe use battery-operated candles with overhead lights turned off.

⭐️I like to use table coverings and have snacks and drinks in little coffee cups.

⭐️At the end, share a bit as a group, and encourage students to consider checking out or borrowing any books that they found interesting.
