Unit Description: View from the Empire State Building by Helen Keller

In this unit, students will embark on an exploration of Helen Keller's View from the Empire State Building, a powerful narrative that transcends the limits of physical sight and immerses us in the world of perception through the senses of hearing, touch, and imagination. Through Keller's evocative language, students will gain insight into the profound ways individuals experience the world around them, particularly when they are deprived of one of their senses. By analyzing her reflections on the cityscape, the Empire State Building, and her internal world, students will be challenged to rethink the importance of sight in shaping our understanding of the world.

Throughout the unit, students will examine Keller's masterful use of sensory language, metaphors, and imagery to convey the complexity of human experience. They will engage in critical thinking and collaborative activities, analyzing the text's deep themes of perception, resilience, and the human spirit. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their own perceptions of the world and consider how different sensory experiences shape their understanding of their surroundings.

Through a variety of engaging activities, including vocabulary development, collaborative project-based work, creative writing prompts, and critical discussions, students will sharpen their analytical skills and enhance their understanding of literary devices. The unit will culminate in a final assessment that challenges students to synthesize their learning and apply it to new contexts, ultimately fostering an appreciation for the richness of human perception and the power of imagination.

This unit provides not only an academic experience but also an opportunity for students to develop empathy and expand their worldview as they learn to appreciate the diverse ways people experience and engage with the world around them.
