Description

This social narrative about what to do when you are angry or mad at school is an ideal way to introduce practical coping strategies that children can use at school when they become dysregulated or upset. The pages are purposefully unnumbered as I have included the behaviors of throwing things and running away and the idea of earning a reward which some settings will not want to include. If these parts are taken out of the story it should still read fine.

Many children with autism, ADHD, or other special education needs find using coping strategies challenging to engage in rather than negative behaviors when they feel angry or upset. Social skill stories are an easy way to introduce positive coping strategies they can use at school.

This social skill story discusses these strategies:

asking for a break
telling your teacher how you feel
asking for a comfort object
picking up what was thrown when re-joining class
leaving classroom if yelling
This social narrative features photographs and simple text and would be a great resource for young children with autism or special education needs who benefit from explicit teaching of social skills.
