NO PREP WRITING LESSON FOR GRADES 4-8
Can voice be taught? Yes! Students are self-guided through a lesson on VOICE and must work through two drag & drop activities before practicing the skills. Great for stations, independent learning, or you could project it on your screen for a whole class mini-lesson during Writer's Workshop. Students can go at their own pace and interact through drag/drop and a video. This resource is perfect for the "flipped" learning model.
Students will explore the meaning of AMPLIFIED writing and how to "crank up the volume" on style.
What's included:
They will go through a 5-step process to create a diary entry for an obscure object. The process of finding something obscure and original is great for highlighting the reason behind brainstorming.
A sample diary entry is included and an analysis of how it creates a sense of mystery through word choice. Their assignment is to write a 1/2 - 1 page diary entry about the object's opinion of their life. This is their chance to crank up the style! My students LOVE this activity and beg to do it throughout the year.
Their entries cannot give away which object they have chosen, but give enough clues that the reader can figure it out. Bring the class back together and have them share their entries on the screen. The rest of the class must guess the object. It's a blast!
For a challenge activity, they are prompted to watch a 3-minute video on voice as it is described by 20 different authors. It's inspiring! Students then come up with their own definition of VOICE.
