Softball teams teach girls and young women the value of teamwork and perseverance along with being good old-fashioned exercise.
Softball teams teach girls and young women the value of teamwork and perseverance along with being good old-fashioned exercise.
But sometimes, these lessons aren’t free: Softball team members incur expenses for gear like bats, balls, padding, helmets, jerseys, and travel – among many other things. Coaches are often volunteers, and they and others often spend their own money on softball supplies.
Classful is here for your funding needs.
In-person fundraiser ideas are on standby for a reason: Supporters always come out to donate or donate online, and they’re a great time for your team, too! Here are some tried-and-true ideas with modern-day updates, which still surprise and delight.
Make sure every team member can participate at least once for every fundraiser. People love talking to the softball players about their favorite parts of the game, their goals on the team, and their winning strategies. Face time with the players ensures your events will be special and successful.
Not only will donors want to get to know the players, but the chances are that many moms or other women will have played softball themselves. Ask them about their experiences! What were their favorite parts of the game? What position did they play? How do they stay involved with softball today?
Chatting with donors is great, but what can you do to get them to donate?
What does every home game, assembly, and pep rally need? Snacks, of course! During quarantine, this would be your moment if you racked up time while working on sourdough, cakes, pies, cookies, or macaroons. Everyone loves delicious snacks, you can show off your skills, and baked goods are fun to make with your family and teammates. And, of course, bake sales today often succeed even more if there are health-conscious options such as nut-free, gluten-free, vegan, or low-sugar.
Many schools and organizations require you to list the ingredients, but even if not required, it’s good practice. Many people have allergies or special dietary requirements you may not be aware of, so it’s important to keep this in mind.
Your softball team will hit a home run with a car wash, particularly in late Spring through Fall. There are several key aspects to a successful car wash fundraiser:
A Home Run Derby is a perfect softball-specific event to raise money for your team. Have your best hitters compete to hit in brackets to as many home runs as possible in 6 minutes, and the winner advances to the next bracket until a champion. You can also try a Hit-A-Thon, where each donor pledges a certain amount per hit (or per home run for older teams) and then pays based on the actual number of hits at the event.
Inclusivity is important for all events. It’s natural to want to put ‘star’ players at the forefront, but remember that all players are likely to have family and friends that want to contribute and that a good cooperative team takes everyone’s effort!
These are great ways to earn money for the team, but of course, these also require an investment. As mentioned regarding the carwash, costs are also involved that offset some of the team’s earnings. Being too elaborate with a theme, venue, or advertising plan can derail your fundraising goals. Consider the upfront costs when looking at the amount needed, or see if someone would donate needed items– the chances are good that you can.
Some teams can get local sponsors for their team in exchange for publicity, which is a win-win. Try asking restaurants, bars, or other team-friendly establishments to put their logo on the team’s jerseys, balls, etc., as part of their publicity. Be creative with who you ask! Pet stores, gift shops, or sports shops may be interested, too; there’s no limit to who you ask. The worst they can say is no. And even if they don’t want to sponsor, you might still get them to donate, pass on a link to your fundraiser, or put up a flier advertising your event.
