But first, what is English as a Second Language (ESL)

Teachers trained in teaching English as a Second Language typically experience high demand for their work. Whether you teach in the United States or overseas, if you are certified to teach English as a Second Language, you will have little trouble landing a job.

In the U.S., immigrants who desire to learn English to better integrate into American society use English as a Second Language. As a result, many schools have implemented English as Second Language programs into their curriculum. In some cases, these programs are integrated as part of the coursework available to enrolled students.

In other instances, English as Second Language programs is offered on school grounds after hours or weekends. English as a Second Language program is sometimes referred to as English For Speakers of Other Languages or ESOL, English Language Learners programs, or ELL.

English as a Second Language is a language program that teaches students and adults the English language as a supplement to other coursework or through their everyday experiences with American life. English as a Second Language is considered a supplementary course or program. However, many ESL teachers are directly employed by the public school system in which they work. In other cases, English as a Second Language teacher may be hired by private institutions as a way to offer English language tutoring to those whose native language is foreign.

ESL Teacher Salary

Teachers of English as a Second Language can expect to receive a salary comparable to what other teachers make, considering the location in which the classes are taught and the teacher’s experience level. Typically, ESL teachers working longer will make more money than someone just starting as a teacher of English as a Second Language.

Remember that teachers are generally paid salaries based on only nine months of work but still receive an annual salary. In other words, the pay is distributed across 12 months rather than nine. This means that when you become a teacher of English as a Second Language, you can also take advantage of the three months when you are not working actively as a teacher. This allows you to pursue personal interests or even earn additional income during that time.

Bilingual Education

More and more schools are offering bilingual education to accommodate the needs of children from other cultures.

It’s common to find bilingual education programs in urban or rural areas with unusually high amounts of culturally diverse students. Bilingual education programs are intended to assist children in keeping up with their peers in subjects like mathematics and science.

These two subjects are the ones that are most likely to frustrate those who do not readily understand English. There are many forms of bilingual education programs. Examples include:

These various forms enable the student to get access to help for subjects that are not language-based, like math and science, while at the same time attending ESL classes.

Teaching English Abroad

Teaching English as a Second Language allows newer teachers to travel and live abroad while gaining valuable teaching experience and learning about other cultures. Each country has requirements for people who wish to teach English as a Second Language. Most countries require a bachelor’s degree and an English as a Second Language teaching qualification, like the Teaching English as a Second Language (TEFL) certificate.

The TEFL certificate prepares teachers for teaching English as a Second Language in foreign countries where English is not natively spoken. There are online courses to earn a TEFL certificate.
