Description

This video is only 1 minute long but this lesson looks at one of the major "thinking skills" introduced earlier in "Ms K's Reading, Thinking, & Writing" course. Analysis involves taking information or the parts of something apart to observe, evaluate, or study it. It can be about an object, a process, an idea, or anything else that can be analyzed and observed.

Analyzing is one of the key thinking skills of the national Benchmark exams in almost every state and lays the groundwork for other skills such as comparison later on in student writing.

Suppose you are working with your child on analysis. In that case, you should think about how to look at the parts of something such as the parts of a flower in Science, the steps of organizing your room, etc. so that they see something as a culmination of all of its parts and can discuss or write about it intelligently.

Analysis thinking skills involve writing a paragraph or essay of the EXPOSITORY type because you are telling, explaining, or informing the reader what you discovered during the analysis stage.

Watch the video about the Titanic's "Final Plunge" and what happened in the last 5 minutes of the disaster. Then use it as a starting point to have students practice how to analyze by asking what they think happened with The Titanic ship (not from the movie), use the video link. Then assign them to write about what happened as an expository paragraph using the process of expository writing which I will discuss in a later lesson. If you don't know the procedure of 3-point writing or expository paragraph, just have them take notes on the video to use for future writing.

This is how thinking works with writing and is just one example of how students need to be conscious of the thinking skill that was used and the type of writing they will use to communicate their thought process.

The file enclosed is just 1 animated video (about 1 minute) and features a discussion between 2 kids about what it means to analyze. Use this as a starting point for lessons on this thinking skill or to get kids thinking about how analyzing something is something we do every day.

Note: For a more in-depth look at the thinking skills, including analysis, refer back to Ms. K's Reading, Thinking, & Writing module that I published earlier here on Classful. It is still available in the store.

Lesson idea: Have students watch the video on YouTube "Titanic's Last 5 Minutes: The Final Plunge" and then analyze what they think happened based on the facts (and ideas) they see on the video. If this were done in a class of several kids, you could divide the kids into groups and see what conclusions they come to based on their analysis of the video and material. This would make a great classroom discussion (or with a homeschool parent and child, 1:1), and it would also show how SUBJECTIVE the process of analysis can be.
