Description

This is a fun student project to complete while reading George Orwell's 1984. It should be completed after reading to at least BOOK 1, CHAPTER 6. This is a great project to introduce to your 1984 novel unit, if you need to boost engagement and excitement for the book. :) This purchase includes a step-by-step slideshow that engages students in learning about and discussing propaganda techniques from our world and the world of Orwell's 1984.

During the first part of the lesson, students receive an overview about the function and purpose of propaganda. Once students have a strong understanding of the how propaganda is used in society, they then complete the assignment planning document which has them choose from four options to create a piece of propaganda that one would expect to find in the novel. Within the planning doc. students are asked to craft their own propaganda message for Oceania, identify their target audience, and add textual evidence from 1984 to support their claims. Once they have completed their planning doc., students then choose their platform that they will create their project with. Platforms and instructions are included in the doc. If your students do not have access to a computer or prefer to work by hand, they can create their propaganda by hand using markers, colored pencils, as a collage, etc.

Assignment can be completed digitally or as a printout. Includes grading rubric.

IN MY CLASSROOM...
My students really enjoyed this activity and their projects turned out so creative and interesting! I allowed them the option to choose a digital platform from the assignment sheet or to create something by hand. I was so impressed not only by the variety of projects I received, but by the amount of effort each student put into their piece and the pride they felt for their piece. Students created painted canvases, a painted t-shirt, poster boards, etc. We ended up having a gallery walk of all digital and hand made projects so that all students could share their work and see the work of their peers.

If you plan to have a galley walk to showcase student work in your classroom once they have finished their Propaganda project, then consider checking-out my Gallery Walk Feedback Form (found in my store).
