BEGINNING DRAWING: LEARNING BY DRAWING THE HAND
Looking for a fun & comprehensive way to start your drawing class? Over years of teaching drawing, I have refined this introductory unit/lesson to start all my beginning drawing classes.
This assignment focuses on the human hand while teaching students a variety of important drawing skills such as: Gesture drawing, Contour Drawing, Negative Space, Shape/Form,
Drawing from a photo: simple sighting techniques, & Foreshortening
These skills are drawn in a series of guided exercises and combined on one large sheet of paper to create a visual representation of student learning and growth over the course of instruction.

I typically teach this introductory unit during the first 4-5 class periods of a semester. I have a block schedule with 120-minute classes. Though, the design of this unit/lesson allows for flexibility based upon your needs.
