Description

This Age of Exploration primary source analysis assignment is designed for advanced high school world history classes. The focus of the texts is Portugal's interactions with non-Christians during their empire building in the early 16th century. Three related primary sources have been selected for students to read and analyze. Included are 11 questions and an answer key. The assignment begins with some background context for students so they can better understand the primary source excerpts. The included primary sources are:

1. Excerpt from Pope Nicholas V's papal bull Dum Diversas
2. Account of Vasco da Gama's first encounter in Mozambique
3. Account of the infamous plundering of the Muslim pilgrim ship by Vasco da Gama during his second voyage to India

Students are asked a combination of comprehension and analysis questions for each primary source reading. The goal with the three sources is for students to understand how Portugal engaged with non-Christians (especially Muslims) during the beginning of their expansion into East Africa and India.

The assignment is available as a printable PDF and as a digital assignment for Google Classroom™ with typable text boxes.
