This project takes students a total of about 400 minutes of class. Students need to learn how to calculate efficiency, brainstorm several options, choose from their or their partner's designs, put the design onto a cardboard backing and wrap it in Seran wrap, build the two sides of the crane boom/truss, connect them, and then test it. The assignment paper comes with a rubric, there is an image for making the base and a SketchUp file for showing students how the project comes together, there is a paper for students to draw their brainstorms, a slideshow about calculating structural efficiency, a spreadsheet to keep track of student-work, and a conclusion worksheet.

How do I keep the wooden sticks from sticking to the students' drawings?
I have my students put their drawings onto a cardboard backing and the tape seran wrap over it to keep the glue from sticking.
