Description

This end of year research project allows high school biology students to investigate genetics while reflecting on content from the entire year! Low prep but high return, this cumulative, critical-thinking resource is the perfect student presentation or extra credit assignment to end your gene expression unit and the school year!

Who Is This Product For?
The End of Year Research Project is best suited for students in either Biology or Honors Biology who have recently learned about the principles of genetics and gene expression. While it is designed for high school students, it could also be a good fit for advanced middle school students learning similar concepts.

What Does This Assignment Entail and Is Included in The Product?
This assignment is a critical thinking research task in which students collaboratively or independently investigate chosen genetic traits. Their goal is to determine what is known about the inheritance and expression on their chosen trait (e.g., gene locus, mutation type, inheritance pattern, etc.) and then to explain that information in depth using content from at least one other unit from the school year. To demonstrate their learning, students deliver an oral presentation with an accompanying tri-fold display.

This resource is perfect for getting students to go beyond memorizing the steps of transcription and translation and to begin thinking critically about how many concepts of cellular biology come together in heredity!

Included in Your Purchase:
• Research Project student handout in PDF format
• Slideshow to introduce the project in PDF, PowerPoint (editable), and Google Slides (editable) formats
• Editable planning spreadsheet to track student groups and progress in Google Sheets and Excel formats

• Traditional and mastery grading rubrics in PDF, Word (editable), and Google Doc (editable) formats
• Font Information sheet
• Terms of Use Agreement

Where & When Should This Product Be Used?
This assignment works best with students who have enough background knowledge of heredity and gene expression to research their traits effectively, as well as the ability to work independently on an assignment over the course of several weeks. In order to get the most out of this project, students also need to have been exposed to the majority of the high school biology curriculum.

Why & How Should This Product Be Used?
Would you like to engage your students in more high-level thinking tasks in your biology classroom? Are you looking for a summative task or extra credit opportunity on the topic of gene expression? Do you want your students to prepare and deliver a final presentation for this school year? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the End of Year Research Project is for you!

Here are some things that make this product amazing!
• Low Prep: This assignment is a time saver " just edit (if needed), print, and go!
• Engagement: Step away from the textbook and allow students to apply biological concepts of their choice both collaboratively and artistically!

Some potential uses for this resource include:
• Apply! Begin this project shortly after your unit on gene expression so students have the opportunity to think deeply about the concepts before being assessed.
• Assess! Use this research project and presentation as part of a summative assessment to determine students' high-level understanding content from the entire school year.
• Extra Credit! Provide this assignment to students who need either a challenge or an additional opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of gene expression.

So, what are you waiting for? Let this engaging final project work for you!
