Description
This classic osmosis lab is sure to be a hit in your secondary science classroom! Perfect for grades 8-12. This lab includes an editable version, digital version, full lesson plan, rubric, answer key, and more! It is broken up into two days and the only materials you need are gummy bears, salt, water, cups, metric ruler, and a scale.
Students will complete a background reading and questions to learn about tonicity, osmosis, homeostasis, and cell transport. They will then make hypotheses, follow a procedure, collect data, make simple calculations (volume, percent change, and density), create graphs, answer analysis questions, and end with a scaffolded conclusion. Your download includes an editable lab handout, PDF version, Google Slides version, detailed teacher's lesson plan, and answer key. Black and white and color versions also included.

Lab Overview:
- Students will read background information and answer pre-lab questions
- Students will take measurements and calculate the mass, volume, and density of three gummy bears.
- Students will place a gummy bear in three different cups (or beakers): tap water, salt water (directions included to make a great solution), and no solution (control)
- The next day students will collect data, make calculations, make graphs, and answer analysis questions
- As a culminating activity, students will complete a scaffolded lab conclusion.
- An editable rubric and answer key is also included
