Description
This is a biographical passage and assessment on the life and accomplishments of Hernando de Soto, the famous Spanish explorer and conquistador. He led expeditions to the Americas, including present-day southeastern United States, and de Soto played a pivotal role in the conquest of the Inca Empire. The passage explores how De Soto's exploration and actions significantly impacted the colonization and history of the New World.
This text was written for Grade 5-8 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc). 1) An engaging and carefully-written 1150-word passage titled 'Hernando de Soto, Spanish Conquistador." The passage is at an upper elementary and middle school reading level and tells the story of de Soto's life and activities as an explorer and conquistador.
2) A total of 29 assessment questions, including vocabulary, comprehension, fact and opinion, and sequencing events in de Soto's life. These questions require close reading and re-reading of the text.
3) A crossword puzzle for early finishers or to use as another form of assessment.
