Description
With a few quick edits, you will have an excellent, personalized forensic lab activity for your students to complete. Add in the name of your school's mascot and the names of your coworkers, and your students will be examining blood types and performing DNA tests in order to determine which of your coworkers is guilty of kidnapping the school mascot!
I have highlighted every section of the lab that you will need to edit in order to personalize this activity for your school. Also included is a mugshot tag, so that, if you choose to, you can add photos of your coworkers making suspicious faces!
Additional teacher prep: 1. As I also mention in a comment on the document, for the "blood types" I use milk and red food coloring. Then label three containers as "Anti-A", "Anti-B", and "Anti-Rh." Then, if you want the test to be negative, put water in the container. If you want the test to be positive, put vinegar in the container. So, for example, if you wanted to make your principal guilty, you would have vinegar in the anti-A and anti-B container.
2. I have always cut out the DNA strips and put them into individual coin envelopes. For less prep, you could simply replace the words "guilty", "not guilty", etc. with your coworker's names and hand students the whole DNA sheet.
My students generally finish this in less than a class period, so make sure you have a review worksheet on hand to round out the day! Happy teaching!
