Description

Lesson 3.4 - Newton's 2nd Law of Motion includes the following files:

3.4 2nd Law of Motion Notes
Covers the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration of an object (F=ma) and relates this to the equation W=mg. This notes sheet comes with an (A) version that has blanks for students to fill out as well as a completed (B) version for students who are absent or may require accommodations.

3.4 Weight Practice
Students practice using the equation W=mg to find an object's mass or weight given the other. This practice is presented as a riddle, where students rotate to different stations and solve several problems, put them in order, and use the letters on the back of the question cards to answer the riddle. This practice sheet comes with an (A) version to be used with the cards and a different (B) version that has the questions printed directly on the page to be used for students who are absent.

3.4 Weight Practice Cards
These cards have a question on the front that can be solved using W=mg. Once students solve the questions on the cards, put them in order from least to greatest, and flip them over, the letters on the back of the cards will start to spell out the answer to a riddle.

3.4 Weight on the Moon Activity
Students go through calculations (either on their own or led by the teacher) to convert their weight in pounds on Earth to a weight in pounds on the moon. This activity sheet comes with an (A) version to be used for the majority of students as well as a shorter and/or different (B) version to be used for students who are absent or may require accommodations.

3.4 F=ma Practice Stations
This document includes 6 stations with 2 F=ma questions each. The pages can be stapled to a manila folder and propped up. The answer page goes under the question page for students to check their answers. Have students use whiteboards to answer each question to add a little fun.

3.4 Objectives & Starter Questions PowerPoint
Learning objectives and sample starter questions for the topic.

3.4 PowerPoint Notes
Notes in PowerPoint format to make presentation to the class a breeze.

The following 2016 Indiana State Standards for Integrated Chemistry & Physics are addressed in this resource:

ICP.3.4 Develop pictorial and graphical representations which show that a non-zero net force on an object results in an acceleration of the object and that the acceleration of an object of constant mass is proportional to the total force acting on it, and inversely proportional to its mass for a constant applied total force.

ICP.3.5 Qualitatively describe and quantitatively determine the magnitude and direction of forces from observing the motion of an object of known mass.

ICP.3.6 Qualitatively describe and quantitatively determine the acceleration of an object of known mass from observing the forces acting on that object.
