Description

This Orton-Gillingham Inspired Dictation Worksheet may fulfill the second stage of OG Teaching a New Concept, part two of the OG multi-sensory experience. Students practice writing and reading words and sentences. For a more comprehensive lesson, I have added the study of Red and Green Words to the process. Teacher may discuss the meaning of said words while addressing the concept in focus. This resource is suitable for both neurotypical and neurodivergent students facing learning disabilities and/or disorders; consequently, requiring reading intervention strategies. The colors, fonts, item dispositions, and every other aspect of this product has been chosen with said students in mind. This is owing to the fact that, for inclusive and equitable quality education, we MUST tailor the education of our students to their unique abilities™!

Research shows that moving while learning ignites and develops areas of the brain as well as improves neuron connections, and offers a variety of mental health benefits like lowered anxiety and depression. For suchlike reasons, I have created Learning Loose™ - a balanced way of incorporating movement in students' learning process. The National Education Association (NEA) goes on to say that Physical activity in the classroom increases cognition, memory, and recall. Moreover, increases in daily physical activity are also positively associated with social-emotional aspects of learning such as mood, behavior, and stress level. This activity includes complimentary Learning Loose™ Posters which are meant to pay heed to the statements above and bring life to your lessons.

I used this resource in my Middle School Special Education classroom comprised of students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, and aphasia. And, it was a great success. I stopped after each concept, red, and green words were dictated and gave students a chance to emulate the posters. When I had more than one of each kind of word (concept, red, and green) I assessed the room and decided whether my students would benefit from additional movement. Sometimes, there was no need to move after every single word. My students appreciated the interaction, learned the words, and improved their reading skills.

PRACTICAL ADVICE
If/when you come up with your own sentences, besides including the concept being studied - for added engagement and enthusiasm - try to include details pertaining to your students' own interests.
Teacher may choose to use the worksheets for independent work. If your student's abilities allow, they may come up with their own sentences and apply concept, red, and green words in said sentences.
