Social cues are the signals people send through body language and facial expressions. Students see people's body language ALL THE TIME whether they are interacting with them or not! Many students who have social skills issues have trouble picking up on social cues through people’s facial expressions, gestures, and overall body language. When young people miss social cues, they can misunderstand people and situations. Recognizing and effectively “reading” social cues can help students become more confident and prepare for certain interactions, comprehend and learn about their surroundings, deal with situations appropriately, navigate uncomfortable situations, and most importantly, avoid potential conflicts.

*********************************************************

This resource features 25 REAL LIFE, HIGHLY RELEVANT picture worksheets that gives students an opportunity to practice "reading" social cues, making inferences about people's body language, and responding appropriately. Students are able to make inferences about people’s feelings and situations and determine the best ways they can respond to them.

▶️ 25 Picture Worksheets (same pictures in the Task Cards)

✅ This resource also includes 25 Social Cues WORKSHEETS with lines and questions (print and digital), so students can write their responses. There are three questions on each worksheet:
1. What do you notice about this person’s (or people’s) body language?
2. What do his/her/their cues tell you about his/her/their situation or what he/she/they may be feeling or thinking?
3. What would be an appropriate thing to do or say to someone in this situation?

✅ Detailed Answer Keys/Suggested Responses are included! These Answer Keys will help prepare you to facilitate discussions with your students!
✅ These worksheets contain the same pictures in the Task Cards. It's a great opportunity for students to demonstrate how they read social cues, make inferences about people’s feelings, thinking, and situations, and respond accordingly.

▶️ 25 Picture TASK CARDS

✅ These Task Cards include pictures depicting people’s various body languages. They can be used as part of a larger lesson, in guided small groups, whole-class discussions, partner discussion before sharing out with the larger group or class, or even one-on-one with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian! These Task Cards contain the same pictures in the Social Cues Worksheets.
✅ You can print the Task Cards out on gloss paper or regular paper and laminate. You may also organize them in a binder ring.

Task Cards can be used in the following ways:

☆ Writing Response: Students can be given a picture to “read” (or interpret) the person’s body language and determine what their cues tell us about their feelings, thinking, and situations. You can ask questions like: What social cues do you recognize? What do these social cues mean? What can you infer about the person and/or the situation? How would you respond to people in these situations? Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these people in these situations and offer better solutions.

☆ Discussion: Students can discuss the Picture Task Cards in groups or whole class. What social cues do they recognize? What do they mean? What can they infer about the person and/or the situation? How would they respond in this situation?

▶️ POWERPOINT (25 SLIDES – EDITABLE!)
This resource includes a 25 slide editable PowerPoint. Each PowerPoint slide contains the pictures used in the worksheets and task cards. You can move or resize the pictures any way you like and even add text! This PowerPoint should help you get started on developing your lesson. The PowerPoint can even be used for picture analysis and help facilitate discussion!
