No children’s book author is more beloved by teachers and students alike than Dr. Seuss.

His whimsical stories with rhyming words and bright, colorful illustrations are enough to make any child want to learn to read. What some people may not realize, though, is just how much wisdom is mixed in along with that whimsicality.

Here are ten great Dr. Seuss quotes to share with your class today

His quotes have changed the world!

1. “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

This one is a classic from Dr. Seuss’s’ I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!. It is as true for a preschooler as it is for adults and is a wonderful way to inspire children to read. This quote and this attitude toward reading inspired the National Education Association to create Read Across America Day, which takes place every year on March 2.

2. “Step with care and great tact, and remember that life’s a great balancing act.“

This quote is especially important for older students. They can relate to life being a balancing act: friends, school, home life – they have to balance it all, all the time!

3. “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”

This quote isn’t always attributed to its correct author, but Dr. Seuss gets all the credit. Long before these divisive days, he encouraged young people to love themselves and be who they are, regardless of what anyone else says about it.

4. “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

According to quoteinvestigator.com, there is some controversy over whether or not Dr. Seuss was the first to say this particular quote. Regardless, it is a terrific quote for the last day of school, when your students feel nostalgic, and you’re feeling a little weepy as you watch them move on to their next year.

5. “A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

Perfect for kindergartners and preschoolers, everyone needs reminding once in a while that being small is not bad!

6. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

This quote from Oh, the Places You’ll Go is a favorite of high school teachers. Many of them gift this book to students as they prepare for graduation, reminding them that they can be anything they want. It is an empowering, hopeful quote that is hard to forget, even when a student goes off to college.

7. “Think and wonder, wonder and think.”

The importance of wondering and thinking cannot be overstated. Wonder is the number one way to develop great ideas and innovations, and thinking is the best way to get those ideas ready for action. Kids who don’t use their imagination don’t have much fun, so this is a great quote to inspire students to dream bigger and question the world around them.

8. “I like nonsense. It wakes up the brain cells.”

To put it even more simply: everyone needs a little fun. Not everything has to make sense. It is okay to be silly now and then. It’s encouraged!

9. “You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.”

This quote can have two meanings. The first is on the surface: if you keep your eyes shut while doing something scary, like riding a roller coaster or swinging high on a swing, you could miss out on seeing some incredible things.

On a deeper level, it is also true that closing your eyes to truths or ignoring things around you while you focus on only your worries and fears will make you miss out on something great.

10. “Kid, you’ll move mountains! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So get on your way!”

The perfect send-off: there is no time like the present to start moving those mountains.
