About
My name is Kenia Asuncion and I am a 7-12 Special Education teacher in New York City. Im trying to raise money for a 10 day trip to a sanctioned Caribbean country.
Although it is early in my teaching career (6 years teaching in The Bronx and lower Manhattan).
I often wonder how this sanctioned Caribbean island achieves such a high literacy rate while our black and brown students struggle to read and write? What strategies are the teachers overseas using that we as American teachers can implement?
This trip serves many purposes first is to develop my teaching skills in order to become a more effective teacher to the students that need it the most.Secondly, to build with educators that wish to close the gaps in our learning systems and lastly to cultivate native pride and confidence in our black and brown students.
How will this be achieved?
1. by meeting with educators working in formal and informal settings
2. participating in popular education workshops
3. discussing education policy and practices with learners oui and educators
