Description
I use this before reading the book to help students get background that is relevant and important to understanding the social and political climate.
This close reading includes two articles.
One is focused on the political climate of the Russian invasion, the Mujahideen, and the rise of the Taliban.
The other is focused on honor killings and the oppression of women. The chart is designed to draw students to specific text and terms and respond by drawing conclusions with text-based questions. My students loved this activity and were excited to read the book after reading these two articles.
REMEMBER: Remove the pages with the teacher key before assigning.
