An ideal activity to use before reading one of Charles Dickens' classic stories!
This is an author biography with assessment questions on Charles Dickens, the most famous English writer of the 19th century. He wrote many beloved novels like "Oliver Twist," "A Christmas Carol," and "A tale of Two Cities." His stories highlighted social issues like poverty and injustice. Dickens created memorable characters and vivid settings, becoming one of the most influential authors in the history of English literature.
This text was written for Grade 5-8 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc). This 'printable/no prep" resource includes:
1) An interesting and educational 1000-word passage titled "Charles Dickens: Factory Boy to Novelist." The passage follows the life and accomplishments of the famous 19th century writer of such classics as 'Oliver Twist" and 'Christmas Carol."
2) A set of 32 questions, including vocabulary, sequencing, reading comprehension, and visual interpretation aligning with these Common Core Informational Text Standards: RI.4.5, RI.5.1, RI.5.4, and RI.5.7.
3) A crossword puzzle for early finishers or to use as another form of assessment.
4) Answers to every question.
