Common Core Reading Standard RI.4.3: Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text.
This is a good way to effectively practice the above Common Core reading standard, and it does so by presenting students with four different short texts, each of several paragraphs. Two of the texts are based on analyzing advertisements or product instructions, one is a scientific text, and the fourth is a technical text. It focuses on having students use the specific information in a text to show an understanding of the important ideas/procedures involved. These are written at a 4th-6th grade reading level. Answers are provided.
