An ideal activity to use before studying Ernest Hemingway's novels and short stories.

This is an author biography with assessment questions on Ernest Hemingway. Born in 1899, Hemingway was the renowned American author and journalist known for his simple yet powerful writing style. He wrote influential novels like "The Old Man and the Sea" and "A Farewell to Arms." Hemingway's adventurous life, including serving in World War I and living in Paris during the 1920s, greatly influenced his work. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

This text was written for Grade 7-12 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc).

This 'printable/no prep" resource includes:

1) An interesting and informative 1100-word passage titled 'Ernest Hemingway: The Man Behind the Words." The passage presents Hemingway's life story and also discusses the inspiration for his novels and stories.

2) A set of 33 questions, including vocabulary study, sequencing events from Hemingway's life, reading comprehension, and visual interpretation that align with these Common Core Informational Text Standards: RI.4.1, RI.4.5, RI.5.4, and RI.5.7.

3) A crossword puzzle for early finishers or to use as another form of assessment.
