Description

Red cabbage is a tried & true pH indicator for your science lab. While you may have played with liquid indicator, you can also make this into indicator paper to save money on expensive pH strips, or powder for long term storage and use. At ~$2 a head, you can easily make 2 gallons of liquid indicator, plenty of paper test strips, or concentrated powder.

You can do a wide range of pH experiments with this food safe indicator. You can also use this to test the pH of food and eat it at the end!

This activity includes instructions on how to make liquid indicator, indicator paper, and powder. I experimented with painting with acids and bases, which your elementary students can play with. The paper and powder can store for 1-6 months, so you can make it when cabbage is cheep at the farmers market and store it for latter.

I wrote this lab for 2d graders, but you can easily expand this into high school chemistry by covering titrations and stoichiometry. This covers 3 ways to make store able indicator for your class needs.

You can use a food dehydrator or oven to make the powder. The liquid you can make in the CFS kitchen (It does smell strong as boiled cabbage), or prepped after school.
