Description

This English/Spanish dual language art rubric teaches young artists to self-assess both their artistic process and product while highlighting individual areas for improvement and promotes critical thinking. This is the only rubric needed for any and all projects, lessons, or units throughout the year and allows young artists the repetition they need to truly understand the creative process which is missing in heavily teacher-directed classrooms. This rubric aligns with TAB or the choice-based art room, where the student is the artist, the art room is their studio, and they engage in opportunities to learn what, how, and why artists do what they do. I highly recommend reading the book, Engaging Learners Through Artmaking: Choice-Based Art Education in the Classroom (TAB) by Douglas and Jaquith if that sounds interesting! They can be printed and used for portfolio assessment and initiate wonderful conversations during conferences or during work time. They are truly differentiated and are carefully calculated for students to visualize that 70% of their success as an artist is the artistic process and 30% is the product. I commonly ask students, "Which is more important, the artist or the art?" I teach K-2, but this rubric is relevant for all levels to document learning and set goals for improvement. The visual icons used are from ClassDojo and can reinforce the artistic behaviors with points awarded, but is not necessary to use the rubric. I assign the rubric on Seesaw for students to complete alongside a photo of their completed project which allows them to document their own growth along the way.
