Description

This is a Physics/ Physical Science lab. It can be good for antsy students with a lot of energy. It allows students to see how high they can jump from a standing position without bent knees

Hang Time is the time you stay in the air during a jump. The goal of this experiment is for students to determine their hang times using the equation d = 1/2a t^2.

Students form groups of 3 or 4. They get a meter stick and at least 2 partners.

When they are ready, they jump as high as they can, keeping their feet together. Remind them not to bend their knees when they jump.

One partner should hold the meterstick with the zero end touching the ground and the other partner should mark how high the jumper jumped (the bottom of their feet) on the meter stick. This is then recorded in the data table in centimeters or whatever unit you want. It will need to be converted to meters to perform the calculations unless you have students convert the acceleration of gravity into another unit.

On the second page, students answer some questions about their height and the length of their arms. the goal is to see how close they can get to the rim on a ten-foot-high basketball hoop when they jump. I also added a random question about jumping over a car at the end to extend their thinking.

I have students do 10 trials, recording their jump height in centimeters every time.
