Description

Do you want your students to understand the historical concept of 'the Cold War" but only have a limited amount of time to teach about it? This concise and informative close-reading text will help accomplish your goal. It tells the story of the Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union, the struggle that occurred between the end of World War II and 1991. It works as a stand-alone history reading and assessment on these crucial decades, but it could also be part of a larger study of post-World War II history

This passage is written for Grade 6-9 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc).

This resource includes:

1) An informative and accurate 900-word historical passage called 'The Cold War." The passage examines the time between 1947, when Harry Truman spoke to Congress about the new post-WWII struggle between democracy and communism, and 1991, when Boris Yeltsin became leader of the new Russian Federation after the end of the Soviet Union.

2) A total of 27 questions. These involve sequencing events and actions, recognizing cause and effect, recalling key names, events, and places from the text, and interpreting and connecting visuals to text statements.

3) An additional crossword puzzle to give as an extra assignment or as an alternative form of assessment.

4) Answers to every question.
