Hi! I am a middle school science teacher! I have been teaching for 13 years. When I was a kid, I would teach my dolls and even had a gradebook to keep track of their progress! Many people become teachers to “make a difference” or positively “change the life of a child”, but if I’m being completely honest, I wanted to do both of those things — in a way that was completely different than my own educational experience. I adore my students and love keeping in touch with them and watching them grow into amazing adults. They aren’t just a name in my gradebook. I get to know them. I care about their story. I remember them.

I strive to teach science with a passion, like so very few of my teachers did. I want my students to be excited about coming to my class. I want them to talk about what they did in science — with their friends and when they get home! I want them to remember all of those important concepts that I teach them, but more—I want them to know that I care and that I will forever be here for each and every one of them if they ever need me. I want them to feel comfortable in their own skin. I want them to feel safe in my classroom, loved, and respected.

Over the years, I’ve learned that school isn’t the highest priority for every student that walks through my door. I understand some children won’t have another meal until they return to school. I understand some have parents that work so many jobs, they rarely see them. Some students have parents that don’t have their hearts or priorities in the right place. Some children don’t have a home. I understand that everyone has their own story. But. When a child walks through my door, I care for them and I am there for them, through thick and thin, no matter what.

I didn’t get into teaching for the pay...or for “summers off”. I did it to be there for human beings that are often misunderstood, under represented, and who all could benefit from a stable adult who genuinely cares about them.

I am a science teacher.

I am also a mother to a wonderful little boy! I have a part time job to help afford things like increasing taxes and keeping a roof over my head. Unfortunately, my part time job is centered around the school calendar and I haven’t had work for a few months. I’ve been tirelessly searching for another part time job, but have no idea what companies have interest in a teacher. It’s sad—I don’t even know what I’m “good” at other than teaching...if that makes any sense. Remote jobs would be best, because I have a young child, but even with a masters degree, I feel inadequate when I read through the qualifications for so many jobs. I continue to apply, but have yet to hear back from anyone. Taxes are due and bills need to get paid. I have many sleepless nights — I’m not looking for handouts. I’m willing to work hard. I just need to find something soon.

It’s wrong to be a professional and to wonder if there will be enough money at the end of the month, but that is my reality.
