I've been teaching in the heart of Milwaukee (53206) for nearly 6 years now. Working with these students has been the absolute honor of a lifetime. As a poor black youth from the Chicago area, I have witnessed the atrocities many of my students have faced, firsthand. Growing up in a single parent, poverty stricken household, I relate with my students on a deeper level. I understand that despite the cards we've been dealt, we have to maintain the utmost expectations for ourselves in order to succeed. And still, in spite of how hard we may work, the fruit of our labor may not be there. Unfortunately, due to poor allocation of funds, systemic racism, and a lack of quality education, so many of the schools and students in the Milwaukee area have seen abysmal results. The ripple effect of these results have been devastating on my community. Regardless, so many of us are seeing and doing amazing things. We have seen that despite the odds, our students can, will and are learning. As a lifelong learner myself, I am continually looking for ways to innovate and provide the best learning for my students by connecting their learning to real world experiences.
