Bullying and being Bullied … a social story unit.
Do you have a bully in your class? If you do, you also have kids who are being bullied. In this unit, a fun instructional story with a camping theme allows readers to choose their own ending: being bullied OR bullying others. In this unit Bailey is a bully. She hurts other people on purpose. Sometimes, she uses her words to say mean things to make people laugh or take attention away from herself. Sometimes, she uses her actions to scare people so they will do what she wants. (like when she hits, kicks, throws or breaks things) Bailey learns 5 strategies to stop being a bully and her friends learn 4 strategies to stand up to her. The personalized stories will really make students think as they are asked to evaluate their actions and feelings then make a plan to become a better friend.

→ Instructional story: Read this to/with your student or class. Send a copy home.
→ Personalized versions: After reading the instructional version, guide the student through personalizing a book with their own thoughts and feelings. Talk them through drawing their own facial expressions, writing their own thoughts, and developing their own plan to improve.
→ My Strategies Poster: post these as cue cards in places where students can see them and remember their strategies
→ My Strategies List: use as a discussion guide to develop an action plan. Send a copy home and to other teachers or professionals who work with the students.
→ Friendship Pledge: encourage students to sign this pledge as a commitment to change. Send a copy home. Post in a place the student can see it often (bulletin board, locker, cubby, etc.)
→ Bullying Worksheet: use this as a discussion or an assessment tool
