Description
Use this nearly zero prep handout to guide students through a virtual lab in which they will simultaneously practice scientific concepts and skills. The virtual lab centers around yeast fermentation where students set up flasks of yeast, water and other variables that is then attached to a balloon. Different trials lead to some balloons inflating while others do not. Students are asked to record each condition, make a prediction about the result and finally record the observed result.
Next students are asked to determine the contents of the inflated balloons with a litmus test. After students interactively determine the contents of the flask in which balloons did or did not inflate, they use the gathered data and their understanding to build a model that represents their thinking about the unseen reactions of the process of cellular respiration.
